“Birth-year sha” does not refer to one universal table across traditions. Some sources use the birth-year branch, others mix zodiac harmony groups with the current year. Without a source and input definition, leave the result unresolved rather than immediately assigning someone a harmful label.

Defining features

Ben Ming usually means a birth-related astrology marker, but the accompanying sha may come from different tables. Distinguish the birth-year stem/branch, personal gua and current year. One zodiac animal cannot supply all three, and an annual direction cannot simply be attached to a person.

How to recognize it

A checkable comparison: Wu as the current year belongs to Yin–Wu–Xu, giving annual Three Sha at Hai, Zi and Chou. If another source explicitly substitutes a person’s birth branch Zi, the Shen–Zi–Chen group gives Si, Wu and Wei. The result changes because the input changes. This substitution illustrates the difference; it does not establish a universal ancient birth-year-sha method.

Common confusions

A birth-year return repeats the same branch, a clash uses its opposite, and three-harmony groups are another grouping. A Zi-born person meeting a Zi year has repetition; a Wu year gives Zi–Wu opposition. Personal gua additionally involves traditional sequence and central-palace reassignment. Births near a year boundary require the choice of Lichun or lunar New Year and the relevant time zone.

Folklore and sources

San Ming Tong Hui, volume 2, distinguishes natal Tai Sui from annually moving Tai Sui. Xieji Bianfang Shu, volume 3, defines the annual Three Sha groups. These texts help disentangle inputs; they do not prove that every online “birth-year sha” table shares one origin. Return to the source whenever a specific rule is unclear.

Traditional responses and practical improvements

Wishes, commemorations and ornaments may serve as personal reminders, not promises to rewrite destiny. Practical arrangements should follow health, work needs and family agreement without labeling people dangerous by zodiac. Ask reports to show inputs, boundaries, rules and reproducible steps. Mark missing information unknown rather than filling gaps with frightening conclusions.
